Doone St resident Ray Clarkson is letting a Taranaki Base Hospital nurse park in his driveway during construction of a $300m hospital wing, which has seen the loss of 180 car parks.
Homeowners living near Taranaki Base Hospital have been asked if they can spare driveway space for staff parking during construction of a new $300 million wing. In exchange, those who volunteered have been invited to a free lunch with Taranaki District Health Board (TDHB) chief executive Rosemary Clements at the hospital s cafeteria. The three-year redevelopment of the site will see the loss of 180 staff car parks and letters recently went out to nearby residents to see if any were happy for someone to park at their place during the build.
Car parks at Taranaki Base Hospital will be reduced by 145 as Project Maunga progresses.
Biking, scootering, carpooling, and a park and ride service could be on the cards for Taranaki Base Hospital commuters to make up for a looming reduction in parking spaces at the site. The hospital is to lose 180 of its 1178 car parks during the construction of stage two of the $300 million Project Maunga redevelopment. With the hospital committed to retaining 260 car parks for patients and whanau, parks available for staff will be reduced to 738. The TDHB employs more than 1800 people, but not all work at Base Hospital.

The Covid-19 testing centre at Taranaki Base Hospital is moving to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services area at the Gate 2 entrance.
From Friday Taranaki Base Hospital’s Covid-19 testing centre will move to a new site off Tukapa St in New Plymouth. The testing centre will remain on Base Hospital grounds, moving from the old ambulance building near Lorna St to the Information and Communication Technology services area at the Gate 2 entrance. The move will allow Leighs, the construction company for the Project Maunga redevelopment, to take over the old location for building purposes. Testing remains open to the public seven days a week and people are still required to make an appointment via text or phone on 027 380 1433.
