UK variant detected on-Island The UK variant has been detected in positive cases of COVID-19 at Martha s Vineyard Hospital. Three cases of the B.117 COVID-19 variant, known as the UK variant, have been detected on the Island, according to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital chief nurse and chief operating officer Claire Seguin. Speaking to reporters Friday afternoon, Seguin said the hospital received results back for variant testing conducted by the state epidemiologist this week. Four the six samples tested came back with three positive for the B.117 variant and one tested negative. The two other samples are pending results and the hospital expects those results early next week.

Island sees spike of 101 COVID-19 cases The 101 new confirmed positive results is the highest weekly total this year. The Island saw the largest number of cases for a 7-day period since the start of 2021 last week. Confirmed cases of COVID-19 skyrocketed last week with the Martha’s Vineyard boards of health reporting 101 new cases between March 28 and April 3. The 101 new cases are more than double the 47 new cases reported during the week of March 21 to 27 and more than the next highest weekly total this year which was 99 cases reported during the first week of January.  Clusters of cases continue to appear and grow across the Island with a new nine-person cluster connected to cases at the Barn Bowl & Bistro. According to a Facebook post, that restaurant remains closed for the next few days. A cluster at Shirley’s Hardware has grown to six cases and a cluster of cases linked to King’s Barbershop grew to eight.
