Deal with tentative summer closing date would be largest US merger since Covid-19 struck
Dallas Shutterstock Am Law top 40 national US firm Holland & Knight is in merger talks with Dallas-based energy specialist Thompson & Knight in what would be the largest US merger since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. A deal would add Thompson & Knight’s 300 lawyers to Holland & Knight’s roster to create a firm with nearly 1,600 lawyers across 30 offices. The two firms issued a statement on Friday (9 April) which said they were in the process of completing their due diligence in connection with the transaction and expect to complete the process in the next 90 days, with a tentative closing date set for the summer.

ESB Professional; Shutterstock K&L Gates has hired 18 partners from four of Nashville’s leading law firms to open in Tennessee’s state capital, its 24th US office. The top 20 US firm by headcount has secured 25 lawyers in total with a broad range of specialisms including health care, litigation, corporate, intellectual property, finance and construction. It said it was targeting the area’s health care, technology and investment sectors and promised further expansion in the coming months.

Richard Macklin Dentons global vice chair Richard Macklin has left the firm after more than 30 years during which he helped struggling London practice Denton Wilde Sapte become a founding component of what is now the world’s largest law firm. Macklin, who was also global client partner with a seat on the global board, stood down at the end of December to take up a portfolio of advisory, coaching and consulting roles, including with Lexington Consultants, which has teamed up with The Global Legal Post to run the three-day law firm management course: Preparing your law firm for success in the post-pandemic era. He was one of five global vice chairs appointed in 2016 to represent Dentons’ regions.

Dentons will combine with Alabama law firm
Dentons has announced that it will combine with Sirote & Permutt, an Alabama law firm with 86 lawyers and offices in five locations. The merger will be Dentons’ fifth combination through Project Golden Spike, a U.S. expansion effort that uses a dual-partnership model. The Alabama firm will be known as Dentons Sirote.
