The Recordings Program. It is quite wonderful actually to be here with everybody. It is something of a reunion in fact since kent was with us for years and years and spending his time at university of South Carolina. For the next 75 minutes, well share with you insights from the secret white house tapes. And well look to explore the dynamics therein and to relate them to see what kind of questions they prompt us to ask about contemporary dynamics about the history they contain, about parallels to todays events, about the practice of democracy itself. Just a word about the Recordings Program, we were established in 1998. And our goal, we are the only institution of its kind doing it, is to analyze and transcribe the secret president ial tapes that president s made from 1940 through 1973. That is from Franklin Roosevelt through Richard Nixon. We do this work at the Miller Center. We actually do it off site as well because so much of the work these days is browserbased. But we publish our
Think we have the answer. Which is no. It was raining cats and dogs a few minutes ago. And i wondered, will there be people there . And sure enough, here you are. I tip my cap to all of you this evening. My name is andy graybill. I am the director of the clement center. I would like to thank the many people who helped make this evening possible. Thanks to jeff, who directs the cph. Especially for those people who have coordinated all of the logistics. During my first semester at the clement center, we received an anonymous 500,000 gift in honor of the governor who had died earlier that year. The donor wanted to hear our ideas first about how we put those funds to use before they were transmitted. Naturally, i proposed that this money be applied to my mortgage. [laughter] he passed. The benefactor liked much more the idea that we use the money to convert one of the junior postdoctoral fellowship lines to one that would support an invited senior scholar. That would cost more and they are
Today, or that to share a little bit about i would like to share about the history of native americans and the culture of native americans in texas. Its very appropriate to begin with the contemporary. I am standing next to a magnificent piece of sculpture by the noted artist alan houser, who was apache. And he was born in oklahoma. He was a descendent of removeds band who was to oklahoma after geronimo and his band was captured. He later became a terrific artist. As you can see, one of the main foci of this particular piece is a native american on horseback. And that is truly the story of native americans in the Southern Plains region and in the panhandle especially. When horses became available to them in the 1600s, particularly the comanches and some of the apache people, they were able to tradersorses from the in santa fe. Stealing some of them as well. They were able to utilize the environment much more efficiently because they could cover much longer distances. The bison hunting

I thought id stay for 23 years. Ive been here for 23. I started out being a reporter and i realized coming in what power was. Washington power was having a president call your name. The people who kept telling me i needed to have a president call me by name meaning the first president i covered, wher
