Good morning, everybody, and welcome to the National Press clubs Morning Newsmaker Program here in washington, d. C. Todays topic is preventing youth sports concussion and what washington, d. C. , is doing about it. One of the first major metro areas in the region to provide a grant for research, education and monitoring of concussions in youth sports. And were also here to talk about other youth sports injury. This newsmaker panel will offer an examination of data, trends and concussion research, state policies and whether or not the u. S. Department of education should adopt federal compliance mandates. Every state in the union has a concussionrelated law on the books and a sports and youth Injury Program regulation on the books. Enforcement is the issue, and compliance is the issue, and thats what the doctors here this morning and the sports data person is going to be talking to us about. My name is mike smith, and i serve on the National Press Club Newsmaker committee, and the comm
Those scientists in the audience right now who will be inspired by what they hear to study astro biological or perhaps some of the other sciences as well. We appreciate your attendance. I will recognize myself for Opening Statement and Ranking Member as well. As we discover more planets around the stars in our own galaxy, it is natural to wonder if we may finally be on the brink of answering the question, are we alone in the universe . Finding other life in the universe would be the most significant discovery in human history. Scientists estimate that there are 80 billion stars in the milky way galaxy. To date more than 1,700 nearby planets have been found by the earth space telescope. Last month astronomers discovered the first earthlike planet orbiting its star at a distance where liquid water could be present, a condition thought essential to life. Called kepper 186f, its only 10 larger than the earth and about 490 lightyears away. The transiting survey satellite which will launch i
Number of papers published on astrobiology increased 10 times, and the two pick report that cited astrobiology increased 25 times. Astrobiology is a serious subject studied i serious scientists around the world. Reflecting this interest, next september, the library of congress and nasa will hold a twoday astrobiology symposium on what the societal impacts could be of finding microbial, complex, or intelligent life in the universe. Whether life exists on other planets continues to be a matter of debate amongst scientists. Around the world, number of astronomers listen to naturally occurring radio frequencies. They try to filter out the cosmic noise and interference of human made satellites and spacecraft to find anomalies that could be signals from civilizations elsewhere. At the citye array institute of finance by microsoft cofounder paul allen and the telescope in puerto rico are two wellknown locations for conducting radio astronomy searches for life in the universe. Astronomers have
Correct. This is how certain he was for these ideas. But thats just one example. When it comes to cosmology and the big bang, we can use the equation to make predictions for how much residual heat should be left over from the big bang today, socalled cosmic microwave Background Radiation. And make predictions on how the temperature of the heat should vary from one location in space to another. And do measurements and measurements agree with the theoretical prediction to fantastic accuracy and that is breathtaking confirmation mathematics is not just speculation, the math is actually aligning with how the world works. Give me an example of that measurement of the cosmic Background Radiation . They go to the north pole or south pole . There are many ways to access it. You can access it through satelliteborne telescopes such as wilkinson Background Radiation probe, which has done a fantastic job measuring microwave Background Radiation. But the recent one i think youre referring to is bic
