from the ground? reporter: no. they are following the news reports reich everybody else. not only at pentagon, but at nato because they don t have boots and eyes on the ground. they have to gend in large part on what they re hearing indirectly through the rebel sources that report back to their leadership in benghazi. and the media reports. there are reporters actually with the rebels inside the compound there. if in fact, the rebels have taken control over that entire compound, that could deal a serious blow to the command and control efforts of the libyan military because that pretty much was the center of the libyan military. but pentagon officials are quick to caution that even if that compound has fallen there are still elements of the gadhafi military, progadhafi forces not only in and around tripoli, but outside of tripoli that are still conducting offensive military operations. so, the fight was is not over yet. the key question that i know you re going to ask, contessa,
gadhafi and his family, i m talking about forces in the field. it s been a month now that they ve been out there under attack more or less from nato air power. they re still there, they re still fighting at least in a disciplined way, in materials of aborting and evading nato air power. what s motivating them? who are those guys and why are they still in? one of the things that we ve seen over the past couple days are reports that the u.s. and others are looking for some place for gadhafi to go. some place in africa. do you see signs that is this contingency planning? do they know something we don t know? frankly, candy, we were talking on this network, i pointed out that secretary clinton said gadhafi must go. i was waiting for the rest of the sentence, must go where? we had to give him an exit through which he could slither and go offscene.
there are no indications that he s willing to relinquish power. the other thing i m hearing, they actually feel more secure many their position right now than they did for instance three weeks ago, for the rebels who are advancing. at this point in time, from gadhafi s point of view, the front seems to be fairly stable, at least the rebels aren t advancing anywhere close to where it could be dangerous for moammar gadhafi. there s a lot of fighting going on, that there s not any big territorial gains being made there. it seems like at this point in time, the gadhafi government and gadhafi himself are trying to silt this thing out and wait to see how much resolve nato actually has, candy. i know you went today to look at a neighborhood in tripoli where apparently there had been big anti-gadhafi demonstrations that were crushed by progadhafi forces, tell us what you saw. 6. yeah, the gadhafi government
