to grant entry or not. we checked in with the government official and now he says it will be considered. perhaps a slight backtrack. no final decision on whether to grant entry to congresswoman tlaib. all of this after israel decided not to grant entry to both congresswoman tlaib and congresswoman omar. israel passed a law allowing it to ban entry to those who support a boycott against israel. this has certainly been the most high profile use of that law. when did israel make its decision? well, we know when it was announced. shortly after president trump tweeted israel will be showing great weakness by letting them in and that left israel very little wiggle room, especially prime minister netanyahu. netanyahu has never publicly disagreed with trump and he wasn t going to start now. it wasn t until shortly after that netanyahu said the two will be decided.
and again, this is after israel denied permission for her and her fellow congresswoman ihlan omar to visit israel, both of who support the boycott of that under. oren lieberman joins me this morning with more. israel under the 2017 law is allowed to do this. they can bar people who support the boycott from coming into the country and they chose to do that with the encouragement of president trump. president donald trump certainly instigated and support the decision saying it would be showing great weakness if they allowed them to enter. benjamin netanyahu has never publicly disagreed with trump and wasn t going to start now. this is the most high profile use of the law. there was an opening that congresswoman tlaib initially took that she would be allowed to enter or at least make a request if it was on humanitarian grounds to visit her family. that was granted by israel s
to two american duly elected congress women, that s something that hasn t happened here before. relying on a law that was passed about 2 1/2 years ago that allows it to bar entry to anyone who boycotts israel. this is the most high profile use of the law since it was passed. this is a reversal of israel s policy, about a month ago it was israel s ambassador to the u.s. considered one of those closest to netanyahu, who said, out of resect for the u.s. congress, israel would allow these two congress women to visit. that lasted until this afternoon, and then the official statement coming from the israeli government and netanyahu. criticism has come from all over the place, including from the pro israel american lobby apac which normally sides with trump and israel. it was still better to allow them to enter the country to learn, to see and to meet.
