The numbers of Americans killed by gun violence is staggering 17/04/2021|2min
Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says the amount of people who have been killed in America through gun violence is “staggering” and the majority of Americans want reasonable gun control.
“The vast majority of American people want sensible gun control, they want the reform to reduce violence,” he told Sky News.
Professor Mathews said a “comparative analysis” between Australia and the US proving “sensible” gun control measures would work can be seen in Australia’s partial gun ban after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.
“When you banned assault weapons, the number of massacres went down, there were like three last 20 to 30 years.”

The credibility of the US criminal justice system hinges on the Chauvin trial verdict02/04/2021|6min
The credibility of the United States justice system hinges on the verdict of the Derek Chauvin murder trial says Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews.
Professor Mathews said the United States was “physically and emotionally connected” to the trial and the qualified immunity officers get needs to be amended to protect citizens’ rights.
He told Sky News there needs to be a discussion about how to “redo qualified immunity in the way that will still protect the police officers but most importantly protect the public they’re meant to be serving, especially based on racial profiling.”
