Follow the smell of the ocean to find where marine predators feed

A joint research project has demonstrated that zooplankton can be located by following the concentration gradient of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a chemical that is released when zooplankton forage on phytoplankton, in ocean water and air. Currently, little is known about how large marine predators search for and find enough food to maintain their body size. This study is expected to expand research into the use of info-chemicals by marine organisms while foraging.
