Independence supporters should consider histories of other fractured movements

LETTERS Former first minister Alex Salmond waving as he leaves after giving evidence to a Scottish Parliament Harassment committee which is examining the handling of harassment allegations him, at Holyrood in Edinburgh. Picture date: Friday February 26, 2021. PA MY first taste of Scottish, left-wing politics occurred in the late 1960s, on a bus travelling down to a major demonstration in London. We were as mixed a delight as any sweetie shop of the time could offer. Somewhere on the M1 a fracas erupted in the rear of the bus. Whether it was over some point of ideology or a stray Maoist had made some indecent proposal to one of the Marxist-Leninist shop workers, we’ll never know.

Clydebank Trades Union Council set to mark 50 years since UCS work-in

A SPECIAL public meeting will be held next week ahead of the 50th anniversary of the famous Upper Clyde Shipbuilders (UCS) work-in. Clydebank’s Trades Union Council has organised the online gathering to commemorate the “remarkable working class victory” and debate the lessons it offers for today’s labour movement. Speakers will include Mary Senior, president of the Scottish TUC, Clydebank resident, David Torrace, who was staff-side chair of the Fairfield Yard in Govan, and Professor John Foster, co-author of the book “The Politics of the UCS Work-In”. The 1971-72 work-in stopped the government from closing the four Clyde yards they ultimately owned, including John Brown’s. They fought for the “right to work” and forced a U-turn in government policy at the time.

Parliamentary group on political literacy no substitute for working-class education, say socialists

A NEW all-party parliamentary group for political literacy is “no substitute” for labour-movement political education, socialists warned yesterday. The new group, co-chaired by Conservative MP Simon Fell and Labour peer Iain McNicol – notorious on the left for apparently working to undermine former leader Jeremy Corbyn while party general secretary, according to an internal report leaked last Easter is pushing for more political education in schools. It points to low turnouts by young people in elections, with the “youthquake” of 2017, when Labour attracted large numbers of first-time voters, not reflected in the 2019 general election. Marx Memorial Library education committee chair Professor John Foster said the group was a “welcome development” but noted that the government had recently issued instructions to schools not to use anti-capitalist material.
