Ms Tranka, who is of Indian South African descent, has been in nursing for almost 30 years and has spent the last 22 years working in the NHS.
Her previous leadership roles before becoming deputy CNO for England in 2020 included deputy chief nurse at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and chief nurse for Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Commenting on her new appointment, Ms Tranka said: “I am honoured and privileged to be taking up the role of the chief nursing officer for Wales.
“It is exciting to be joining the team in Wales as we look to the future and build on the learning from the past year.
