The Champagne Summer Ball run by Durham University Champagne Society has been cancelled for the second year running due to police concerns, the society has said.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the Champagne Society stated: “Apparently absent of any real crime to tackle, the police have again decided to focus their efforts on us instead. As a result, the ball in its current form is simply no longer viable.”
The society was investigated “on the basis of the potentially life-threatening combination of excessive alcohol and students entering the water at Hardwick Hall.” The Students’ Union stated that “the risk assessment put in place had not been delivered on the night.”
