The outgoing vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University has violated the constitution, university law, and a government embargo by appointing 137 teachers and staffers on the last day of his office, found a probe committee.
RU VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan was involved in a punishable offence , said the probe committee members and education ministry officials.
The probe report that was submitted to the top officials of the Secondary and Higher Education Division yesterday also recommended imposing a ban on the overseas travel of Sobhan. We have submitted the probe report, probe committee chief and University Grants Commission Member Prof Muhammed Alamgir told The Daily Star yesterday. He refused to make any further comments.
Over the last year and a half, the University Grants Commission had recommended taking action against at least four vice-chancellors of public universities upon investigation of their alleged corruption and irregularities. RU Registrar Prof Abdul Bari resigns

Prof Abdul Bari has resigned from the post of registrar, Rajshahi University.
He submitted his resignation letter at an emergency syndicate meeting of the university yesterday in presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof M Abdus Subhan, syndicate member Prof Habibur Rahman told The Daily Star.
On December 13, the government in an order directed the VC to take necessary steps to relieve Prof Bari from his post for not properly assisting the UGC committee in probing allegations of irregularities at the university.

First five patients recover after cardiac treatment at PIC

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) has become a reality as the first five patients who recovered from the cardiac surgeries were all praise for the doctors and the staff of the cardiac centre as well as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for providing quality of services to them.
Of the five patients, four were extremely poor and couldn’t afford the treatment cost, but thanks to Sehat Sahulat Programme that helped them seek the quality of services to save their lives.
All the five patients, who have now recovered and are supposed to return home today (Tuesday), were 60 plus. The first patient operated upon in PIC was 63-year old Abdul Sattar. He belongs to Peshawar and couldn’t control his emotions when recalled “unusual” cooperation of the doctors and PIC staff with him.
Teachers of Rajshahi University demanded immediate implementation of recent government orders, including relieving Prof Abdul Bari from the post of the university registrar.
The RU authorities were compelled to postpone a meeting of admission test committee yesterday after several teachers refused to attend it in presence Prof Bari.
The teachers move came as the government recently asked the university authorities to remove him for not assisting the University Grants Commission probe committee.
The teachers, while talking to The Daily Star, also said they would boycott any meeting that would be attended by Prof Bari.
As soon as the meeting of the admission committee for the 2020-21 academic year began at 10:00am with Vice-Chancellor Prof M Abdus Subhan s speech, some teachers protested presence of Bari in the meeting.
