this was, not as he said on this very network, not an easy decision for him to make. it took him some time to come around to it. but the bottom line is, that the ukrainians really need it for the fight there in right now. we can t leave them defenseless. and if we don t provide these cluster munitions as a bridge, until we can get normal production rates of artillery, unitary, normal artillery shells up to speed, they re gonna run out. so, it s really important, they re in a gunfight, they ve got to have these cluster munitions, but it is just a bridging solution. it s not meant to be a permanent add to their inventory. obviously, that raises questions about the u. s. s own inventory. of ammunition. but john, on another subject, north korea has fired a long-range ballistic missile off its east coast. is there still zero communication between this administration and north korea? look, we have channels to be able to communicate with pyongyang. we don t have, as you know,
trying to cut off the supplies of the russians. given that probable strategy, can we supply enough ordinance? are we short ordinance here in the united states and turning it out? can we get enough to them? sort of yes to both, mike. one, yes, we can meet their needs. that s one of the reasons why the president agreed to send cluster munitions as a part of a package of additional, normal, what we call unitary, regular artillery shells, to make sure that we keep the flow going so howitzers don t fall silent. we think over the next month, we ll work to get the production rate up of artillery shells so we can resupply them at a faster pace than we are right now. inventories are running low. part of the reason why that is is, again, because of production rates, but we have to make sure we have enough for our own national security in the united
after the war end. u.s. manufacturers of 155 millimeter shells can t keep up with the demand from the ukrainians. but again, the united states made a conscious decision to reduce the industrial base to be efficient at peace time production rates. one thing we have seen with ukraine is you can really move through a lot of munitions in a short period of time and we don t want to be caught flatfooted here. we need to make sure our production lines are up and running. the u.s. has shipped more than 1.5 million howitzer shell rounds to ukraine. the main factory, 1 of 2 in the united states that produces 155 millimeter shells is in scranton, pennsylvania, doubled the amount of ammo it s producing, 20,000 shells.
