The COVID-19 pandemic has had an intense impact on the entire world, and especially on the gaming industry, forcing the cancellation of most physical events throughout 2020 and into 2021. However, people are resilient and sometimes good things come out of the bad. Nioh is a game in which various gods, demons, and well-known (and perhaps a bit obscure) figures of Japanese folklore appear prominently throughout the game, but apparently a social movement in Japan regarding one such figure was so prevalent that Team Ninja took the opportunity to include it in the Nioh 2 DLC. Mind some light spoilers below.
The mythological figure in question is Amabie, who appears as a new Guardian Spirit in Nioh 2’s The First Samurai DLC. Recently, we had a chance to speak at length with Nioh series Producer Fumihiko Yasuda about Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition. Among the various topics of discussion were how player feedback affected the game and DLC.

Team Ninja will be increasing development on a few unannounced titles this year. In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Producer Fumihiko Yasuda confirmed
Ninja Gaiden is not one of them. He also clarified that there are currently no plans for a sequel in the
Nioh franchise.
Ninja Gaiden series, but at the moment he hasn’t gotten the green light to make the game. However, protagonist Ryu Hayabusa might be making an appearance elsewhere in the meantime. In an interview with TheGamer, Yasuda confirmed he’d “definitely like to have him make an appearance again in a game coming soon” with more details on this to be announced as soon as possible.
Nioh 2’s launch in 2020 was a pretty enjoyable sequel to Team Ninja’s take on Soulsborne gameplay and action. Set in Feudal Japan in a story in which demonic yokai, spirits, and gods are drawn to wartorn battlefields and the mysterious energy known as Amrita that flows through them, the sequel expanded on everything the first game did to offer a rich melee combat experience. Now, Team Ninja is breaking out of the confines of PlayStation 4 and expanding the experience to PC and PS5 editions. We got a chance to play Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition on PC and came away with love for the sharp improvements Team Ninja has made to this bundle of the second game and its DLC.
Remasters of Nioh are right around the corner. The first Nioh and Nioh 2 - The Complete Edition will bring the base games and all of their DLC together in upgraded next-gen bundles, but the question remains: Where does Team Ninja go after that? To learn more, we talked to Producer Fumihiko Yasuda, and while he claims Nioh 3 is something he eventually wants to work on, it will probably come after a few other Team Ninja projects.
Yasuda spoke to Shacknews in a recent interview that touched on the future of Team Ninja and the Nioh franchise on January 19, 2021. In said interview, Yasuda revealed that the launch of Nioh and Nioh 2 Remastered and Complete Editions will likely mark a stopping point on Nioh content as Team Ninja shifts attention to other projects. That said, Nioh 3 certainly isn’t out of the question.
