AUSTIN, Texas - Two Austin City Council members are calling for a pause on the idea of temporary encampments following a briefing Tuesday morning on two proposed city-sanctioned homeless campsites.
Mayor Pro Tem Natasha Harper-Madison (District 1) and Council member Paige Ellis (District 8) are calling for the pause because they are not convinced that these sites would be a cost-effective solution, but rather a band-aid tactic, says a statement.
Austin City Council hears plan for homeless camps on city properties
A plan to turn two city-owned properties in Austin into homeless camps could be taking a step forward Tuesday. FOX 7 Austin s John Krinjak has details.
Camps are set up outside the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless last October.
A preliminary plan to set up encampments on city-owned land in Austin has hit a snag.
The Austin City Council directed city staff to identify land for temporary camps last month after voters reinstated the ban on public encampments. The initial list was met with pushback, so staff has asked to extend Thursday s deadline to next month and begin setting up a temporary shelter in the meantime.
Mayor Pro Tem Natasha Harper-Madison told City Manager Spencer Cronk and staff at a briefing last week she wished the rollout of a list of 45 potential sites was more transparent both internally at City Hall and with residents.
