threatening war. none of that this year. instead talking about their economy and food situation because they ve been dealing with covid, too, and the lo lockdown of their border with china, 90% of the trade with the most important trade partner has fallen apart. it s true three times we ve seen the missiles being tested but they re short-range missiles, these aren t rrdconsidered red lines by the south koreans or the americans. the important part is south korean elections are coming up and the leader actually more interested in pro-engagement with north korea is ahead significantly in the polls. unclear why the north koreans would be trying to potentially undermine that outcome by getting themselves more in the headlines in south korea, of course where this makes all the news. ian bremmer, thanks for being with us. good to see you guys. the department of justice
is time to do more. telling the security council that if you re going to sit there and not vote for additional sanctions against north korea, then you are holding hands with kim jong un. michelle kosinski, cnn, the state department. well we have new reaction to north korea s latest missile test, this i m out of seoul. cnn s paula hancocks joins me live from the south korean capital. paula, the u.s. not ruling out at least military action. but where does that leave the south koreans? reporter: well, hannah, we ve had a reaction from the south korean president, moon jae-in. he is in germany at this point, meeting with angela merkel early on. he said he was calling for stronger sanctions. he was calling for more international pressure on north korea, which is a bit of a departure from where he started just a few months ago. he has always been pro engagement, pro dialogue with north korea. but now after this icbm launch, he is moving closer to the u.s. line and pushing for more
lower. but we haven t had the exact assessment from the south korean military. we re trying to find out what they think the range was and certainly whether or not that will be updated by u.s. pacific command, as well. the tweet you mentioned by the u.s. president, that was just after the missile but before we realized just how significant this missile test could have been. it will be interesting to see if there s an updated response from the white house. we had a comment from the south korean president moon. he s warned north korea ton cross the bridge of no return. bear in mind, this is a pro-engagement, pro-dialogue support. he supports talking to north korea. now he s saying if north korea crosses the red line, south korea and the u.s. don t know what our response would be. we don t have an official indication of what that red line is. certainly a potential icbm, if it turns out that it was that, is significant. dave? live in seoul. thank you. the latest provocation from
chang changed? reporter: the assumption is the options haven t changed, they ve been updated. if there was a new option, new silver bullet, it would have been used to fix the issue of north korea. the options that we have at this point are the same. they are the sanctions, there is the option of china, whether more pressure could be put on china to try and curtail the missile and nuclear program of north korea, whether china wants to try that. and then of course you have the option of negotiations, of engagement with north korea, and the military option which mcmaster did specify that nobody wants. we did have the six north korean experts in in the u.s., very distinguished gentlemen, this day actually writing an open letter to president trump saying that they believe that it is time to talk. talks are needed in order to avoid a nuclear catastrophe. this could well be the message that we hear, as well, from the south korean president when he meets with president trump later today.
right wing are very pro defense, pro military, pro engagement. this is actually these are peoplifying these wars. go ahead, josh. one way to be pro defense poem don t think about, if you look at the biggest deliverers of mental, medicare is one of them. people don t think about that as connecting to like veterans struggling for help in this documentary but they should. ellen, i want to also talk about people helping the veterans. these call center responders are dealing with these problems and these stories. 22,000 calls a month. how do they stay, how do they maintain a sense of resilience and optimism. what was it like when you were interviewing them? many of them are veterans, about a quarter are veterans. a lot of them have experience with veterans. they live with them. i think they have a tremendous sense of mission and purpose in what they are doing.
