What all this I read about Greyhound Bus Lines not operating in Canada anymore? Heck, they haven’t picked up passengers in Portage for a couple of years, have they? That sure evoked some memories for me, so let me tell you a few of them…

Yes, he lived in the east end, and he ran the first bus into Winnipeg back in the 30s. He used a standard-looking bus for a while, then had a “double-decker” model that was quite unique. Some said that it was actually fabricated at the local Waterloo Manufacturing plant up on 4th Avenue, but whatever the case, my Big Brother and I once rode into Winnipeg in it, UPSTAIRS.

When the comment was made that I had been writing this column for some 29 years, non-stop, it was suggested that perhaps it was time that I told the story of how it all began. That’s an awfully long time, so maybe I had better dig into my files and check it out. But first, a bit of the background of this old guy who has just celebrated his 95th birthday….

Well, my GREAT grandfather homesteaded up on Portage Creek in 1871; my grandad and grandmother were married in High Bluff in 1892; they bought a house on Lyon Street in the east end of Portage, but both died early, leaving four orphan sons. Charlie, my dad, started working at the age of 12 for the Review newspaper, and after he came back from The War, he went to work for a Mr. Pickell in his printing shop. He happened to meet Gracey, who was one of four type-setters at the Daily Graphic, and they got married in 1921,

The Curling Club is proposing to acquire the present skating rink between Campbell Street (Royal Road} and Tupper Street and to erect a larger building to be used for hockey and skating. It would be 50 feet long and 25 feet wider than the present rink.
