and two weeks after the supreme court ended the federal right to abortion, the nightmare scenario is playing out across the country as we get new evidence of hope and growing backlash. all in starts right now. good evening from new york i m chris hayes. you know, it may be 2022 but today we have a new story in the official investigation into an apparent or possible trump administration s conduct. today, the irs announced it is asked the treasury department inspector general to look into audits of the two who dared to cross donald trump. james comey and andrew mccabe. they were both selected by the irs, supposedly at random for very rare intensive financial audits. to give you a sense of just how rare this invasive random audit is, just one out of 30,600 taxpayers i selected for in any given year, and all the sudden interment us occasion with the irs is still run by the trump appointee commissioner claims it is quote, ludicrous untreated suggest that senior irs officials are
trump campaign, and the russian government. and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and russia s efforts. it would later be revealed that trump had demanded loyalty from comey, and repeatedly pressed him to end the investigation into trump s first national security adviser, michael flynn. after he refused to do so, trump fired comey in shocking fashion. in a remarkable oval office meeting the following day, the day after he fired him. trump told russian diplomats that by firing comey, the previous day, quote, i faced a great pressure, because of russia. that is taken off. around the same time, he all but admitted to lester holt that he had fired comey because of the, quote, made-up russia investigation. with comey gone, andy mccabe became the acting fbi writer director. in one of his first actions, the very next day, was to open up a counter intelligence investigation into the president, in his ties to russia out of fears that he too would be fired. and
we have an entirely different show planned for tonight, but the business the former fbi director, james comey and his former deputy, andrew mccabe. both of whom president trump saw as enemies. both of them faced rare, supposedly random, but highly intensive irs audits. you may remember back when then fbi director james comey oversaw the early stages of the investigation into ties between the trump campaign and russia. in the summer of 2016. with questions swirling about those ties, as trump took office, comey dropped a public bombshell in the early days of the trump presidency. i ve been authorized by the department of justice to confirm that the fbi, as part of our counter intelligence mission, is investigating the russian government s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the trump campaign, and the russian government. and whether there was any coordination between
that hearing will take place after the committee has videotaped the testimony of pat cipollone. cipollone, think, is the trump white house s top lawyer. he s a man who, at least as far as we know, appears to have pushed back on some of the most dangerous and brazen ideas conceived of by the ex-president and his closest allies as they worked to overturn the results of the 2020 election. cipollone also held the same job as john dean whose legendary 1973 testimony was a turningpoint in the watergate investigation. here is what january 6 investigator john wood had to say right here on msnbc about the tremendous significance of the committee getting an interview with cipollone. it was really important that he would eventually end up testifying before the committee and on the record and videotaped so the american people can see it. i m glad that is coming together this friday so hopefully the committee will show some of the key clips of that interview during a hearing next week.
