Where southerners have all around them the trappings of slavery and segregation and something to unload, a burden to unload. Worse people in the north, particularly white northerners dont think of their round paths are their own heritage in that way. In fact, they think of it as something to about two, something to aspire to. That is what i mean about the sense of history at the beginning and the first story that i start out with as you said is about springfield, massachusetts. That city is a small city in massachusetts about 150,000. In 1939, just as world war ii was starting, the later said that city and School Superintendents pioneer plan they said would abolish prejudice and abolish racism. From the School System and from the city of large. So they adopted the curriculum and these principles with the highminded goal of eradicating from young peoples minds racism. He came upon it on their own or did something push them to a . Well, they drew upon curriculum being developed by a bunc
[laughter] and it is an oh my. Moment and it must have been to maxwell because not only is electricity and magnetism things that can travel like waves but the wave is that the speed of light. And when you craft that you are overwhelmed with and a motion of amazement and how beautiful it all fits together because its not just symmetric. They are little bits of asymmetry that are necessary for the pieces to fit together that way. And its not just that maxwells equations are beautiful but you know what is the light that maxwells equations describe. Whoever said that the universe had to be so beautiful . We have a board of directors consisting of judges who sit in three divisions of the Eastern District the ox andrea and north which division and we have attorneys to serve on the board as well. By tying the story of the Historical Society is a story of really some very key people that help society get started in 2006 and i would like to think the specific individuals. The first is u. S. District judge james spencer. He was the chief judge for the same district in 2006 and instrumental in helping our society get it started. There were several judges involved in the project that we will hear about today the society itself but there are a couple that deserve no. U. S. District judge Claude Hilton who sits in the Alexandria Division was sentimental and judge henry martin junior who sits in the Northern District in u. S. Bank Bank Bankruptcy judge just as the thais who retired in 2013 was a bankruptcy judge in richmond. Last but not least on the stage u. S. District judge henry hutson. Judge
Amount of cases and things to talk about, we needed to find someone with a passion for not only the history of the court but understand the dynamics of the history of virginia that were occurring when these cases were being tried. I was fortunate in that i reached up to one of my law school professors. And the 1st thing he said. We were very fortunate. He agreed to come on board. It was a journey he did an amazing job. I had know experience with publishers, editors, or archivists but but i do through this project. And at times controversial history of the United States District Court for the district of virginia. Our court was one of the first courts in america and is one that has a history but a tremendous amount of debt. Others tried to capture that history and found it to be an overwhelming project. So after a couple of years of frustration, we turned to john pierce. Hes not only a lawyer but also a story in and published author and the proof is in his work the history of the court.
I will give an abbreviated version of the bios we have in the programs. Tracy is a native of appomattox. He has worked for the National Park service. He has been at Petersburg National battlefield since 1997. He is the author of one of the volumes and the howard, virginia regimental history series. He is also passed president of the lynchburg civil war roundtable. And the appomattox county historical society. His talk today will be on the fall of petersburg. Please welcome Tracy Chernault.
