Year of high profile verdicts, 2 get jail & fine, others freed

Year of high profile verdicts, 2 get jail & fine, others freed 28 Dec 2020 / 08:28 H. KUALA LUMPUR: 2020 has indeed been an eventful year for the country’s judiciary with verdicts made over several high profile cases, with the most prominent, involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. Other court cases that took centre stage this year included on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, corruption, criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering which involved prominent leaders in the country. On July 28, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and RM210 million fine by High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali after finding him guilty on seven charges of CBT, money laundering and abuse of position involving RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

It will only get weirder

Dramatis personae of the year in politics: (From left) Muhyiddin, the political cat with nine lives; Dr Mahathir, the persistent politician; and Anwar, the perpetual-PM-in-the-wings; plus a slim majority in the Dewan Rakyat all made for strange politics in a very strange year. And things will not be getting back to ‘normal’ anytime soon in the new year. Filepics Yes, 2020 has been all round a strange year for so many things, including politics. IT has been a weird year, politically. The year 2020 started with the continuation of the expected political game between then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and prime-minister-in- waiting Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In February, it ended unexpectedly: Dr Mahathir resigned as Prime Minister. It was as if the Langkawi MP had outplayed himself when he plotted to stop the Port Dickson MP from becoming PM.

Rumblings in the opposite aisle

Plan backfired: Can Anwar rise against the latest political hurdle? In an ironic plot twist, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is now facing a no-confidence challenge after Budget 2021 was successfully passed in Parliament. “WHO else can be Opposition leader? You tell me, ” an opposition MP asked when we were discussing PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership of the Opposition bloc. It was a day after the Opposition lost its bid to defeat Budget 2021. The Bill was passed when 111 Perikatan Nasional government MPs voted for it, 108 Opposition MPs against it, and one MP abstained. The irony of the Budget 2021 vote is that instead of it being a de facto confidence motion for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, it has turned into a no-confidence test for Anwar.
