CORONA INFECTION LEVELS IN NORWAY HAVE DECLINED by nearly half since they peaked in mid-March, according to new data from public health institute FHI. That raises prospects that the government will be able to proceed with its cautious reopening program in May and restrictions may be eased even Oslo, which has had the highest infection rates.
Last week’s 3,717 new confirmed cases of the Corona virus are down 43 percent from the same time last month. FHI also reported that 2.9 percent of everyone tested last week were positive, down from 3.3 percent the week before.
Deaths are also down, from 21 during the first week of April to 18 last week and five so far this week.
Commission hails Norway’s ‘resiliency’

Norway has survived the Corona pandemic better than most, according to a state commission that delivered its verdict Wednesday on how the country has handled it. Preparedness for a pandemic was poor, as it was in most other countries, but “Norwegian resiliency” based on the public’s trust in their leaders has carried the country through what the commission called Norway’s “greatest crisis since World War II.”

FACED WITH A LOOMING SHORTAGE OF VACCINE in Norway, the head of an expert group studying Corona’s economic impact is urging expansion of the period between the first and second shots. That would allow more Norwegians to get their first shot, and that can help prevent the spread of infection.
