defense in the war on terror. yes, it s true. scientists are reengineering plants to change color if they detect dangerous explosives, air pollution, or even toxic chemicals. this is a smart plan. alicia acuna joins us from denver. how does this work? reporter: jenna, like you said, when they defect in their environment, these plants, explosives, chemical agents, biological agents, they turn from green to white. pretty wild, right? well, scientists at colorado state university have modified the seeds of these plants to become just one more layer of defense in the fight against terrorism and beyond. and they turn completely white when they sense something that s nefarious around them. you can imagine this work at csu has gotten the attention of the u.s. department of defense and homeland security which are now working with professor june medford, who developed this science. medford says plants have the mechanisms to react to their environment. take a listen:
