Forged in the raw immediacy of the University of Oregon house show circuit, Eugene-based indie rock trio Novacane knows what it means to maintain their groove in an unusual environment.
“If you can remain rhythmically tight in 120-degree heat,” Novacane drummer Zach Clifton says, clearly exaggerating the heat of a house show and with people bumping into you in every single direction, “you can remain tight in any situation.”
What’s it been like for a popular trio used to playing in this kind of environment two or three times a week around the UO campus to spend this past year without live music due to the COVID pandemic?
Like everything else in 2020, country music was full of unexpected moments many of them painful. Even before the coronavirus pandemic started spreading wide in the U.S. and forcing shutdowns, Nashville, Tennessee country music’s epicenter was fighting its own share of battles. A tornado whipped through The Music City the first week of March, causing severe damage to the East Nashville neighborhood, where many country artists live and work. Even when engulfed by damage and sickness, the country community rallied. Even when they lost some of the greatest among them, like John Prine, Kenny Rogers and Charley Pride, country musicians found the strength to stay engaged with fans (if only through livestreams), fight for much-needed change and share some truly stellar records in the process.
Margo Price: That’s How Rumors Get Started
The modern-day “Queen of Nashville,” Margo Price is a sheer force of nature, onstage and in the studio. Taking a page from her buddy, fellow country-rocker Sturgill Simpson (who also produced the album), Price takes her country/folk roots and turns the amps all the way up, literally and figuratively. It’s a rollercoaster of sound and intent, with Price once again at the center of lyrical subjects many in Music City still ignore. For every “bless your heart” aimed at her from the industry elite, she reciprocates the sentiment with middle fingers held high, guns blazin’.
