very novel way. it is made of this carbon fiber, as a opposed to having a pressure hull built out of titanium. and that carbon fiber is the real question mark here, it certainly was for me. there is very little data about how that material is going to behave and the kind of pressure cycles it was going to be put through. and the kind of temperatures it was going to be exposed to. and there was simply nothing to benchmark it against. and so, the more time i spent in titan and talked with stockton rush, i couldn t get comfortable with the fact that there was almost no way to assess the risk of the vehicle. it was impossible. dave it has been an awful few days as people have followed the story. as friends, and family, have waited in panic. the navy now says it detected sounds consistent with an implosion shortly after the sub went missing.
now the search and rescue turns into a search and recovery as authorities attempt to investigate what led up to the tragedy. rear admiraljohn mauger confirmed in that press conference earlier that five parts of the vessel were found approximately 1,600ft from the bow of the titanic wreck. among the pieces of the titan discovered at the site were a nose cone, outside the pressure hull, and a larger debris field. admiral mauger noted the noises detected wednesday did not appear to have any connection to the sub. cbs news reports that the us navy detected an acoustic anomaly consistent with an implosion shortly after the titan lost contact with the surface, which ultimately led them to narrow the search radius. let s get a reminder of how today unfolded. my colleague carl nasman has been with me in boston throughout the day. to start with that last piece
A "catastrophic implosion," such as that believed to have destroyed the Titan submersible, would have happened with incredible force and speed given the crushing water pressure on the floor of the ocean.In an implosion caused by a defect in the hull or for some other reason, the submersible would collapse in on itself in milliseconds, crushed by the immense water pressure.
