separations in june, reportedly after some pressure from his daughter and others. but tonight, hundreds of those families are still torn apart. with us for more, emily jane fox, senior reporter for vanity fair. her recent book is born trump: inside america s first family. and the low point for the children, the infants in baby jails, was being yanked out of their mothers and fathers arms, and the low point for ivanka trump was reading about it? was the press scrutiny. maybe the low point was the scrutiny she got on twitter for posting this picture. was that the low point? why else talk about it in the past tense? this is something still going on. there are hundreds of children still separated from their families. to speak about the low point having already happened when
years into the future. so is there a way to get them from marshals custody into the i.c.e. family detention centers with their children? and i don t think that this government would be in a hurry to do that because they are already so pressed for space. we know that there s only a little over 3,000 beds available for families right now and they re pretty much at capacity and so that s why they re trying to expand by 20,000 with the defense department. i mean, what impetus would they have to reunite all of these people and space that just isn t available right now? i don t know when or how they ll do it. let me put up a tweet from my former colleague mark salter, senior advisor to john mccain who wrote, if we had a functioning congress, the relevant committees would call the hhs secretary to appear, ask how many shelters and where they are and threaten to cut off all money until they were open to members of the hill and press scrutiny. that s certainly the case in the old days when th
general kelly can issue an apology. the greater issue that you re speaking to is we ve got an administration chockful of generals and former generals. we can t have a situation where their status and supervise shields them from scrutiny and basic oversight. that s just untenable. and if that s an argument that sarah huckabee sanders is making it is not only going against years of democratic tradition. going begins the president s own actions before he was president. but, you know, it s just not a workable solution for the relationship for this government and the press. you know, it s the president s choice to fill this administration with generals and former generals. it was those generals and former generals choice to become political in their own roles. and those are fine choices but that doesn t shield them from press scrutiny. from press scrutiny, from criticism, especially when
plate and resist any kind of potential aggression faced by the alliance. there is a fun moment when prime minister may, traditionally what happens is the president calls on two reporters. the prime minister calls on two reporters usually from the uk and each reporter asks questions of both leaders. one of the british reporters had some rather had a rather edgy question for president trump about all the things he believes that might scare people in the uk, including support and a belief that torture works. the president said he doesn t he thinks it works but he s going to leave it to mattis who doesn t think it works. it s unusual to hear a president talk so openly about torture which is by definition, international and national law. there has certainly been british press scrutiny of the issue. i don t think there was a major discussion between the two leaders. this was more of a big picture meeting about the larger importance and the american special relationship.
ran for president a third time and lost? does he want you know, have that press scrutiny again that he had when he ran the last time? so there are a lot of decisions joe biden needs to make at this point. and also if you look at the polling, no one is calling for joe biden to get in right now. so it really i think chris is absolutely right. i think he wants to run but is it logistically possible at this point? let s put the numbers up jackie is referring to. here s the, what should we call it, the tolerance quotient for the waiting game. 30, 31. is there a threshold of support? yes, but it s tepid at best, right, zeke? he s not going to look at these numbers and see an answer for himself. this isn t like paul ryan. he s not going to be nominated by acclamation by the republican party. joe biden can say everyone has to vote, you know, support me and then i ll jump into this race. nobody is calling for him to do this. there are people worried about
