Senate Republicans are as much on trial as Trump

Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) swears members of the Senate for the impeachment trial of former President Tump on Jan. 26. (Senate Television / Associated Press) As former President Trump’s second impeachment trial gets underway in the Senate on Tuesday, the nation’s attention is, once again, drawn to a man who craves it like a drug. But the focus really ought to be on the members of the Senate, on us as a nation, and on whether we are capable of using the tools the Constitution set out to protect the democracy from a president any president who abuses the power granted by the people to serve his own interests.

Fear and loathing in leafy suburbia

We’ve been thinking about these suburban voters (mostly women) who voted for Biden. Many of them say they voted for President Tump in 2016. And the demographics (presupposing there really are valid demographics for this allegedly crooked election) would seem to bear them out, at least in some cases. Previously, we were told they voted for Trump because they were worried about safety and security. This time, the argument goes, it was mostly about decency and civility and what they supposedly saw as Trump’s lack thereof. Plus, those unending Covid fears. And it’s a safe bet that among the married women in this group, more than a few husbands were influenced to turn left.

Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of President Tump s closest allies, on Sunday pushed back against an effort to contest the results of the presidential election by GOP senators and senators-elect as an unrealistic political dodge. Eleven GOP senators led by Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) on Saturday said a commission should be set up to investigate the election won by President-elect Joe Biden. They joined Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) in saying they would contest the results of the election. Proposing a commission at this late date - which has zero chance of becoming reality - is not effectively fighting for President Trump. It appears to be more of a political dodge than an effective remedy, Graham tweeted Sunday along with a Fox News article about the effort by Cruz and others to set up an electoral commission to audit vote

The Day - For unity, look to the good that President Trump has done - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published December 23. 2020 4:54PM  In response to Kenneth Wade’s article, “Trump backers won’t forget treatment of president,” (Dec. 20), I am sad that there is such a strong and bitter division between people in our nation. I can totally understand why supporters of President Tump might feel ostracized and unhappy about the many displays of resistance, frequent fact-checking and making jokes at Trump s expense. Most of us have not adequately learned the lessons of kindness. When we are kind to each other we get along better and we all feel happier. As we approach the end of Trump’s term of office, I would really like it if his supporters would remind us of some of the strong points of his presidency: the accomplishments that will help you to remember him as “one of our best presidents.” I feel sincerely that this will help readers to become aware of some of Trump’s strengths that they may have overlooked. By helping others appreciate Trump’s good qualiti
