FRANKFORT, Ky. - Senate President Robert Stiversâ (R-Manchester) bill that would allow the City of Corbin to annex into southern Laurel County is moving to the Senate Floor for vote, after it was passed out of the Standing Committee on State and Local Government Friday afternoon by a vote of 8-2.Â
Senate Bill 274 (SB 274) has drawn the attention of local county and city officials as it would allow Corbin to annex property in Laurel County, but only to the extent of its utility infrastructure already in place. Current law prevents cities like Corbin, who has two of its precincts in Knox County and five of its precincts in Whitley County, from annexing into a third county.

A Republican-sponsored bill in the Kentucky legislature would require the governor to replace a departing U.S. senator with someone from the same political party.
The proposal is supported by Kentucky’s 78-year-old U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell and comes as state lawmakers continue to try and chip away at Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear’s powers.
Senate Bill 228 would be a big change from how Kentucky governors currently fill senate vacancies picking whomever they want.
Instead, the governor would have to pick a replacement from a list of three nominees selected by the state party of the departing senator.

Kentucky state senator John Schickel said in a press release from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce that he will be co-sponsoring a bill to keep historical horse racing machines legal in the state.
“This effort is about preserving a system of wagering we’ve known for live racing for decades and historical horse racing for the last ten years,” Schickel said. “This is about maintaining the status quo. Our immediate action as legislators is critical to protecting current and future jobs and economic development across the Commonwealth.”
