The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers voted to approve new contracts and a return-to-work plan Sunday night. Students will return to class on Tuesday, March 29.
As details of the tentative agreements began to emerge Friday morning, they provoked widespread opposition among educators, which continued to build over the weekend.
The union has said it will hold votes this weekend, in an effort to stampede educators into accepting an austerity agreement before they have time to study it carefully.
With nearly 5,000 educators in Sacramento, California, also now on strike, the teachers’ unions are moving rapidly to shut down the struggle in Minneapolis and keep the walkouts from coalescing into a broader movement of the working class for higher wages and the expansion of public education.
