Texas Tech honors fall 2020 graduates with limited in-person ceremonies

Newly minted Texas Tech graduates walked to receive their diplomas and celebrate their accomplishments during in-person, socially distanced ceremonies Friday and Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The university changed its normal fall commencement schedule to offer both in-person and virtual commencement ceremonies for December 2020 graduates due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Attendance was restricted to graduates and a limited number of family and friends.
But the ceremonies Friday and Saturday included much of the traditional fanfare, including messages of encouragements from Tech regents and President Lawrence Schovanec and enthusiastic cheers from friends and family.

Texas Tech mourns loss of police sergeant whose death was linked to COVID-19
Texas Tech leaders on Wednesday were mourning the loss of a longtime veteran of the university s police department.
Sgt. Ricky Eade s death this week comes after he served nearly 24 years with Tech s police department, reads a statement from Tech released on Wednesday.
“Today the entire Texas Tech community grieves the loss of TTPD Sergeant Ricky Eade, reads the statement from Tech President Lawrence Schovanec and Chancellor Tedd Mitchell. He was a 24-year veteran of our university police force, a father of two teen boys and a beloved member of our community who will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
