Federal prosecutors recommend two-year sentence for former UAW President Dennis Williams for fraud and corruption

Federal prosecutors recommend two-year sentence for former UAW President Dennis Williams for fraud and corruption Federal prosecutors are requesting a 24-month sentence for the disgraced ex-president of the United Auto Workers, Dennis Williams, for his use of hundreds of thousands of dollars in corporate cash and workers dues money to finance lavish getaways for himself and his fellow union bureaucrats, court filings revealed on Monday. Williams is one of 14 UAW officials and corporate executives to have been charged in a years-long federal corruption probe. Williams pleaded guilty last October to federal charges, which would have carried a maximum sentence of five years. However, the terms of his plea deal capped his sentence at two years.

Dennis Williams points fingers at UAW brothers ahead of sentencing

View Comments Detroit  Retired United Auto Workers President Dennis Williams should not spend more than one year and a day in federal prison for stealing from union members because he is an American success story, is charitable and has health problems, his lawyers argued late Monday. The attorneys pushed back against the government s request that Williams, 67, one of two former presidents convicted in a years-long investigation into corruption within the U.S. auto industry, spend two years in federal prison for helping push one of the nation s most influential unions into prolonged government oversight. In a sentencing memorandum, however, Williams continued blaming underlings, including his successor, former President Gary Jones, for conspiring to embezzle more than $1 million in union money. The funds were spent on personal luxuries, including private villas for months at a time for Williams, booze for his wife, lavish meals and more than $60,000 in cigars and humidors.

Feds want former UAW President Dennis Williams locked up for two years

Federal prosecutors Monday portrayed former United Auto Workers President Dennis Williams as an imperious, hypocritical thief who should spend two years in prison for helping embezzle hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on luxuries, including private villas, cigars, booze and more. Williams, 67, will be sentenced May 11, the first of two former UAW presidents convicted in a landmark corruption crackdown that has revealed labor leaders and auto executives broke labor laws, stole union funds and received bribes and illegal benefits from union contractors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV executives. The federal prosecution has led to prolonged oversight by the government that will last six years, cost millions and target wrongdoing within one of the nation s most influential unions.
