University, Student Government to host first Courageous Conversations event

The new discussion series will offer a forum for direct engagement with leadership about how the University of Miami can come together to create a more inclusive environment and serve as an overall exemplary institution. It also will address issues presented by participants.
Over the past few months, the University of Miami has taken a hard look at how it can truly serve as an exemplary institution, accelerating its work on diversity, equity, and inclusion as it works to help heal the pain in our communities caused by racism and inequality. The University has committed this academic year to engaging boldly in addressing pressing social issues, including racial justice.

The two have led their respective units, Student Affairs and the Office of the General Counsel, to new heights during their long years of service to the University.
Two longtime University of Miami leaders renowned in their fields, Patricia A. Whitely and Aileen Ugalde, started at the University of Miami during different eras the former in the 1980s, when new computer technologies emerged and something called MTV reshaped pop culture, and the latter in the 1990s, the decade that saw the Soviet Union fall and the advent of the internet.

Some members of the University of Miami community share how they were able to weather the ups and downs of 2020.
These past months have been extraordinarily challenging for all and for many nearly unbearable.
So, what is it that people leaned on, what was the “one thing” that helped them get through the day, a week, a month? Maybe it was learning a new skill; creating a new ritual; or engaging in a special connection with a friend to share experiences that helped fuel inspiration, lift hope, and bolster spirits.
