Revised Olympic Qualification System for Weightlifting at Tokyo 2020 Published 05/05/21
Lausanne, 5 May 2021; The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) yesterday welcomed the publication of the revised Olympic Qualification System, developed in agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Adjustments had become necessary in order to reflect the circumstances of the pandemic.
“As Tokyo 2020 approaches, athletes deserve as much certainty as we can all provide for them. The IWF would like to thank the IOC for approving a revised Olympic Qualification System for weightlifting that will contribute to this kind of certainty,” said IWF Interim President Dr Michael Irani. “The revised Olympic Qualification System also stays true to the principles that brought widespread praise: clean nations will still be rewarded with the greatest possible opportunities to qualify athletes. IWF Launches Governance Consultation, Establishes Revised Timeline For Congresses 03/04/21
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board has today launched a widespread consultation exercise for its draft governance reforms, while also announcing the anticipated dates of Congressional and Electoral Congresses.
“Only four months have passed since the IWF established its Reform and Governance Commission [RGC],” said IWF Interim President Dr Michael Irani. “In that short time, under the leadership of independent experts, the Commission has already carried out a comprehensive governance review and has now proposed a complete overhaul of the IWF’s constitution and bylaws.”
The governance review and the proposed constitution have today been sent to IWF Member Federations and external stakeholders, including the IOC, for a consultation period lasting until 31 March. Comments arising will be considered in April, with the intention of providing a final draft

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board (EB) today agreed key decisions to restore stronger Anti-Doping Rules and ensure eligibility checks of the candidates for the forthcoming IWF elections are carried out to a high standard.
“Today’s decisions reflect a clear determination to safeguard the progress made by the IWF in recent years to protect clean weightlifters and promote clean weightlifting,” said IWF Interim President Dr Michael Irani. “For the first time ever, the IWF is also carrying out comprehensive eligibility verification of candidates for our elections against clearly-defined criteria.”
