At 7:00 a.m, I quickly checked my phone, got tiredly out of bed, brushed my teeth with my eyes still half-closed, picked out my outfit and eaten breakfast. I was all dressed and ready for school at precisely 7:40 a.m. And then my mom came into the kitchen with a gasp exclaiming, “Chloe, you didn’t know? Snow day!”
While I, like anyone, am always happy when my parents tell me there is a snow day, I see a problem in the above scenario that goes deeper than the explained inconvenience. Students are not notified of important messages that pertain to them. In the past year, emails containing vital information about COVID cases, changes in attendance policies, reopenings and, yes, snow days, are sent directly to parents who are expected to inform their children, or worse, not inform them, of the content in the email.
A 75% capacity hybrid model, in which students are divided among four cohorts with three in person at a time, will be implemented at Staples starting March 1. Under this model, hybrid learners will attend school in-person three days a week with Wednesdays remaining as remote days.
Westport’s elementary and middle schools began transitioning to full in-person learning on Jan. 28. All hybrid students at the middle schools attend school four days a week, with a remote half day on Wednesdays. Distance learning remains an option at both the elementary and middle school level.
“Balancing our public health responsibility with the needs that our students have,” Superintendent Thomas Scarice said in a Board of Education meeting on Jan. 19, “I think the benefits of a full on-site in-person schooling is so important […] that it is a time to move in that direction.”

Students who are absent from school but present online for more than 10 days will be required to switch over to Cohort D/full remote learning.
This announcement came from an email from assistant principals to the students and parents of their respective grades on Dec. 8.
“If your child was scheduled to be in school with their hybrid cohort, was absent from school, and accessed their class online, they will be coded Absent but Present Online (
APO),” assistant principals wrote. “Remote learning for a longer duration (beyond 10 days) will necessitate a student being moved to Cohort D/full remote learning.”
The decision comes after a week of many students choosing to participate in school as APO learners instead of coming to school on their assigned cohort days.
