A pro-Israel rally featuring former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder drew about 200 protesters to El Cajon Sunday, some of whom clashed with local extremists just one block east of where the duo spoke.
While speeches and musical acts entertained about 500 people gathered to hear the two conservative figures at the “We Are Israel” rally at El Cajon’s Prescott Promenade, self-described members of antifa exchanged punches with men and women associated with different East County “defender” groups that organized in response to 2020’s Black Lives Matter protests.
Men and women from each side threw punches at one another ahead of the main body of the protest march. A man wearing black who appeared to be with the antifa demonstrators emerged from the crowd and sprayed pepper spray at the people fighting. A We Are Israel rally got underway Sunday in El Cajon with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, conservative radio host and California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder, and the city s mayor Bill Wells in attendance. Meanwhile, an opposing group held a protest nearby to voice a differing opinion.

Mike Pompeo, the former CIA director and secretary of state under Donald Trump, will be the keynote speaker Sunday at an event in El Cajon billed as a rally against antisemitism.
A slate of conservatives and self-described Zionists are also expected to speak at the “We Are Israel” rally, including radio host Larry Elder, a Republican running in the California gubernatorial recall election, and El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.
Mike Slater, the conservative host of a weekday talk radio show on AM760, will host the event, planned for 3 p.m. at the Prescott Promenade off East Main Street.
