The 'pickled' fetus of an Egyptian mummy has baffled scientists who are researching the cause and process of its preservation.
The findings of study, under the Warsaw Mummy Project, have been published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.
It was initiated by a group of archaeologists bio-archaeologists from the University of Warsaw in 2015.

The first remnants of an ancient Egyptian mummified pregnant woman has been discovered, having been found in Thebes, dating back over 2,000 years.The dead body was 28 weeks into her pregnancy when she passed on, scans of the body showed.

The Warsaw Mummy Project
Scientists working as part of the Warsaw Mummy Project from the Polish Academy of Sciences, worked to get more information about the woman, assumed to be in her 20s. Through X-rays and CT scans combination, the team found the remnants of a fetus, that is around 26 to 30 weeks old, inside the woman - the first time a mummy that is pregnant has been found.

An Egyptian mummy previously believed to be a priest has turned out to be a pregnant woman, scientists from Warsaw University said. The discovery, first of its kind anywhere in the world, was made as part of the Warsaw Mummy Project. The researchers, who since 2015 have been working to thoroughly examine human and animal mummies from Ancient Egypt at the National Museum in Warsaw, uncovered the body’s true identity after spotting a tiny foot in the abdomen on a scan.
