the flow as i institute my plans of putting in place plain-clothes anti-gun unit or modified anti-gun unit in plain vehicles, as well as precision policing. how much of that, you know, call by protestors to defund the police, which was obviously not something you have supported, nor has president biden ever supported, but that call which did gain a lot of popularity among hundreds of thousands of people protesting in the streets. obviously, was politically one thing. but it certainly was not popular among police officers. it there has been a really drop in morale. and even all those calls about, you know, police shouldn t respond when somebody is in a mental health crisis, it should be a mental health counselor. i from what i have read of the killing the two officers just recently, they were responding to a domestic call from a mom who was having trouble with her son. no mention of firearms involved and they got there, and he came out of the bedroom with guns
shootings in the city. so this way we re going to get it right. we heard from new yorkers. one of the things they were concerned about, these officers will wear partial modified uniforms, they will use their body cameras for every interaction. we re going to have the proper supervision and we re not going to have the blanket that we were using before, stopping and searching people based on their ethnicity and zip codes that they lived in. this is a precision policing, going after those 600 trigger pullers in the city that participate in 17% of the violence, less than 1% of the population. you and other members of the nypd i ve spoken with frequently talk about the iron pipeline, guns flowing into the city, particularly from the south, states with lax gun control laws. as you know, national gun legislation really isn t going
of the 1994 crime bill, which president biden sponsored back in 94. this is very different what he s proposing today, so that s very good, but we don t find it acceptable to criminalize essentially black and latino children in an effort to keep streets safe. we don t think it s necessary and we don t believe ift going to keep anybody safer. so the real challenge is how to go after, you know, violent crime without essentially ensnaring young black and latino especially men and boys in the service of that goal. and really that s precision policing. so we should not just be asking for more resources for law enforcement. we should also be ensuring that they go exactly where they are meant to instead of simply kind of feeding a beast that may not be keeping us safe but may actually be criminalizing
increase as the fear increases. that is what the president today was attempting to address. recognize that it has now reached a national level. as eric adams understood when he was campaigning for mayor mayor in new york city, there was a palpable fear growing and they both have plans to try and alleviate some of that some of that fear. good news is the nypd is very good at this despite its demoralized, diminished state at the moment. last year, they took 6,000 guns off the streets of new york. so if they can get reenergized, if they can get resupplied, if you will, if they can get refunded, they can regain the energy and they can show the rest of america how to do it. precision policing is the way to go. we talked about that. we have spoken about precision policing a lot. let me ask you about i m sure money helps. the president is calling on congress to give an additional $300 million to state and local law enforcement agencies. so, if you are going to fund the
city, we went from 700,000 stops to a mere 12,000 stops and in that same period of time, we saw a decline in the murder rate by 50%. so what we need is not aggressive, abusive policing. we need precision policing combined with reinvestments in underserved communities. i want to ask you about something that s come up today involving the matter of race in this country. very popular podcaster, joe rogan, is surfacing after him using the n-word more than 20 times on various podcasts. the video we re going to show our viewers is an edited compilation. the slurs are bleeped out but we want to warn our viewers this is still disturbing to hear. you know, the [ bleep ] thing. saying the word [ bleep ]. i already said [ bleep ] calling you like this boy that he s a [ bleep ]. starts calling him. there should be a word like
