Herkimer, Oneida Counties End Weekend COVID Steady

The new COVID numbers in Oneida remain steady and well below the winter spike the area experienced in December and January. In Herkimer County, the health department there is seeing a slight uptick in case, however the positivity rate remains low.
On Saturday, Oneida County reported 33 new positive cases and 563 active cases in the county, dramatically lower than December when active cases were over 9,000. There were no new deaths in Oneida County and 31 county residents remain hospitalized.
Herkimer County reported 19 new cases on Friday, and 12 new cases on Saturday, bringing their active positive COVID-19 cases to 71. There were no new deaths reported on Saturday and eight county residents remain hospitalized.
Four COVID-19 Deaths Over Weekend in Mohawk Valley
There were four new deaths in the region from COVID-19, according to local health departments. Oneida County reported two deaths on Saturday and two on Sunday, bringing the total number of people in the county who have died of COVID-19 to 394. Herkimer County reported no new deaths and remains at a total of 94 deaths from the disease since the pandemic began a year ago.
The positive news is the far lower plateau reached in both counties with new daily cases of well under 100. Oneida County is at a season low of 616 active cases with a total of 88 new cases over the weekend. Herkimer County reported 20 new cases of the virus and 94 active cases currently.
One COVID Death, Numbers Still Low in Oneida and Herkimer
Another person has died of COVID-19 in Oneida County, but the number of new cases, active cases and hospitalizations continues to be low.
The local death becomes a part of the national total of COVID deaths that topped 500,000 on Monday afternoon. The total number of deaths from the virus in Oneida County is now 389, the majority of those coming since late October. Herkimer County s death total is now 92.
The positive news is the number of new daily cases which have declined significantly from December and early January when new cases were over 300 per day. Oneida County s health department reported 43 new cases and Herkimer County added only five new cases. Hospitalizations are also down significantly with 48 residents in Oneida County, and 18 in Herkimer County, hospitalized.
