beshear on one of his last campaign stops monday night in bowling green and i asked him a bunch of times about the implications. the democrats said this is not a national race, this is about bevin. this is about teachers. this is about healthcare. look, the moment the race started to come in last night. the results started to go the way of the democrats last night, that s are very excited. they think they scored a victory against the republican party against president trump. so you know, if you go with what the democrats said on monday, this race is a local race f. you go how they are feeling today, the elation today, it s about trump. it s a message you say to voters and what you are actually thinking in your head sometimes? great to have you there, you will continue to follow that story. for the first time this week, a witness called by the democrats has showed up and this high ranking state department official could show why the state department did not back
have litmus tests. republicans for a long time have had litmus tests. this pre-dates when i worked in the house of representatives. republicans need to ask themself, you want to nominate eric cantor or dave bratt? ultimately one may be successful in the general and one may not be. this is why we are seeing republicans doing poorly in richmond and suburban washington, d.c. and northern virginia and those zrikts outside of philadelphia where we seen republicans retire, we seen themry tire in texas. republican versus a real existential problem in suburban communities. that s due in some part to donald trump and his unpopularity in those areas, also in the direction the party has gone pre trump, the candidates that they ve nominated. that s why they re in this real trouble. it s not one thing, it s actually more than one. listen to this from donald trump, jr., he was on laura ingram s show on fox last night.
perfect. but the strategy to defend that call and the alleged quid quo pro not so perfect. here s the pressure on those shifting sometimes contradictory strategies. the first defense, of course, was to dismiss the whistle proceeder s defense entirely as false. then the president and his allies made it clear no quid pro quo on the call. more details appear, including the white house s own rough transcript, acting chief of staff nick mulvaney says the opposite. let s be clear what you described is a quid pro quo. we do that all the time with foreign policy. i have news for everybody, get over it. mulvaney almost immediately walked those comments back. as more testimony emerged, sworn testimony, republicans took a new approach, attack the process. they stormed a closed door hearing where a key witness was about to testify. it is a sham and it s time for it to end. what is happening here is not fair. the next tactic, discrediting
that a parade of witnesses, most of them career diplomats have come forward and testified on capitol hill and essentially corroborated much of the whistle proceeder s complaints. and i think as this investigation nears its public phase, it s going to be more and more untenable for republicans to simply ignore the allegations against the president or to pretend that these witnesses are not credible. they re trying to move the goal post and suggest that his actions don t amount to a quid pro quo. although, his testimony suggests otherwise. to you, kaylin collins has interesting reporting that just crossed. at a meeting call yesterday with republican senators on the hill, the vice president, make pence, his message was, stick with the transcripts. the white house released transcripts of that july 25th call between president trump and president zelensky. that is your defense, stick with the transcript. have you dpleend anything from
to call bevin s loss a referendum on the president. obviously, you are pointing to the fact state wide if kentucky republicans won five of the six races with a nice, into is majority there. does it tell us anything about trump? any of that? no, i think it might have trump s late-minute visit might have pulled it a little closer, a little bit. you call him embattled and upr unpopular, i d add to that didn t run a great campaign, didn t raise a lot of money, he was on everybody s radar screen for a long time. i don t think this has a whole lot to do with donald trump. this is about matt bevin not being a governor that kentucky wanted to reelect. as you look at the other state wide races, republicans did well including electing the first republican attorney general since the 1940s, the first african attorney general as well in the state. that is difference, daniel cameron winning as attorney general by 16 points.
