no damage. schools will be open tomorrow. neil: what about the power situation right now? yes, there are probably about 4,000 or 5,000 angelinos that are without power. that s being restored quickly. i just have to say to the department of water and power and all the other first responders, they were so quick and ready that there wasn t a lot more damage to the city. neil: i also notice because there was ample warning to your point, mayor, a lot of people prepared for this. you were telling them to prepare, a good many did do just that. invariably there s does that don t get ready and don t think it s a big deal. how are they sorting out right now? and it was a handful. i think those were some of the individuals that were stuck because they didn t get the warning of driving through water. so they re the ones that are getting their cars towed today.
it feels limb like apocalyptic film. no deaths reported so far. i would have to imagine from your perspective that s remarkable, a sense of relief. how did the community manage? you know, i think honestly the blessing in it all was probably the time of day. you said people, kids still at school, folks still at work, and so, you know, luckily it does go through an area with some schools. they suffered some minor damages with the kids inside, but, you know, there is no major damages to the schools. just businesses and houses in the area. we spoke last hour with the mayor of deer park, power a major issue there, understandably. what is the power situation in pasadena at this hour? we still have 14,000 residents without power, and i m told it could be days at this point. it s not just poles that are
13 centimetres of snow. numerous people had said they have never experienced anything this badge, hurricane force winds, near wipe out conditions in the city and the priority at the moment is trying to dig out of the residence. vehicles have been buried, the death toll is over 20 now, emergency responders the other number could go up as they clear out the city. a driving ban is still in effect, residents can hopefully get around as they are trying to clear the roads, there is the hope that people can get basic food supplies after several days stuck inside. then there is the power situation, authorities hope to restore parity residents who have been without that. certainly this will be a christmas know it will soon forget or restore power to residents. there have been harrowing
weekend for so many people. i know for the first responders as well who were just trying to get to as many people as they possibly could. i know there s been an update to the power situation over the weekend the substations it sounded like were just freezing, they were literally having to go in and thaw those out. what s the update on power because so many people didn t have heat. yeah, so, you know, i can t believe the great work that the men and women of nsec did. they couldn t go up on the posts with 70 mile per hour winds. they were dealing with the power lines that were on the ground. now with the winds having died down, the amount of people without power has decreased. and, again, that s it was gut wrenching when you re getting calls where families are with their kids and they re saying they re freezing. maybe the dad and someone went to get gas for the generator so now we re assisting them to get back to the house. it was just, you know the wind was the biggest issue. the
conditions, snow is continuing to fall. our meteorologist here in buffalo forecasting up to six inches of snow on top of what is already impassable roads. and the power situation must be quite challenges as well. it is cold. and when we re hearing about the death, people dying in their cars but also people dying in their homes really dire situation. mike swartz, thank you for your reporting. as with you saw there, the storm is causing major travel problems at airports across the country. already this morning over 1700 flights have been canceled. that is on top of the backlog from the holiday weekend. and cnn s carlos suarez is live at the atlanta international airport for us. high, carlos. what are you hearing from travelers or should i ask you how they are coping with all of the delays and cancellations? reporter: amara, good morning. the folks out here, they are just making do with the fact that they re probably going to be stuck in lines behind me for
