Dairy farms in New Jersey have been under extreme economic stress for years. The number of dairies in the state has declined to less than 50 down from hundreds a few decades ago. And the decline continues among those dairies that sell the milk to distributors.
A dairy farm is a business, and a business cannot survive when the price paid for the milk produced is less than the cost to produce that milk. This is the failing economic system now in place for dairies that sell milk to the big distributors.
