India forced to buy LNG three times costlier due to coal shortage - Due to the acute shortage of coal in India, electricity can be generated using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the power plants.
The Railways is trying to take steps "at war-footing" to transport coal and also cut down the time it takes to move coal to power plants, officials had earlier said.
The move, which marks the first time the world's second-largest coal importer is issuing timelines for imports, can put pressure on the global prices of coal as the utilities rush to avoid a repeat of the electricity crisis in April.
Union Power Minister R K Singh has said the Delhi government is misleading the public with incorrect information about the electricity situation in the national capital.
