Opinion: Meet two mothers who brought Arab culture to San Diego school children

Bittar is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, writer and president of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, San Diego chapter, and Coordinator for California. She lives in North Park. Haifa Khoury, a Palestinian, and Hiam Khaireddin, a Jordanian of Syrian descent, both mothers with three children, met in the 1990s at an Arab American social gathering. Eventually, they joined forces on the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) San Diego and served on the Social Engagement Committee. Their daughters, Farah and Jenna, were the same age at Poway Unified Middle School. The girls practically lived at each other’s homes. The girls also complained, “Why are we called nomads?” Their seventh grade social studies textbooks illustrated the prophet Mohammed as a warrior with a sword, contrary to historical accounts. The school district did not give Haifa and Hiam’s concerns attention, until they brought in ADC San Diego. The ADC made a presentation urging the
