it depends. i don t have any objection to transparency and the rest. and you didn t allow it when you were speaker. i think it s supposed to be about following the procedure, the debate in the congress and if there is more opportunity for that, fine. but i don t think it should be used as a tool against members. i saw you talking to so and so on the floor and this or that. that shouldn t be the case. this was remarkable because when this pwas going on, there were members in the house and they said terrible things on the republican side but we couldn t challenge it because there were no rules on the house and forgetting whether it s rules or not, for a potential speaker or anyone to go up to a member in

california congressman cechg mc kevin mccarthy was elected speaker of the house in the 15th round of voting. that was easy, huh? [laughter] i never thought we d get up here. maria: mccarthy took several blows on the way to obtaining the necessary votes to win but, ultimately, flipped several members in the 13th and 14th rounds even as at one point florida representative byron donalds emerged as an alternative to mccarthy, gaining 20 votes himself to potential speaker. congressman donalds flipped back to mccarthy after reaching a deal to verify his promises. they include a balanced budget within 10 years and a vote on term limits for all house members, among others. joining me right now is congressman byron donalds himself. congressman, thanks very much for being here. good to see you, maria. good morning to everybody. maria: so at one point you went against mccarthy, another point you were voting for somebody else, and then seeing
party. you both make such important points. i want to thank our guests and turn to someone who just popped up, republican congressman byron donald who supported kevin mccarthy in the early ballots, broke with him on the third, and then became a speaker candidate himself. how are you, sir? doing good. a little tired but doing good. i can understand that, being tired. my first question is, what made you break with mccarthy on the third ballot, and then we saw your name float as potential speaker. now you re back to supporting mccarthy. what were you saying with that vote? well, i think going back to that day, at that point it was clear we were pretty deadlocked. my primary function in coming to congress was to make sure, one, the people s house works, is functional, and accomplishes things that further the lives of the american people in our republic. but we were deadlocked at that
