In late February, TIAA a leading financial services provider that ranks among the 100 largest corporations in America named one of Baylor’s own as its president and CEO.
As of May 1, Thasunda Brown Duckett (MBA ’01) now calls the shots for one of the nation’s largest providers of secure retirements and outcome-focused investment solutions. She is just the fourth Black woman in history to serve as a Fortune 500 CEO, and of just two doing so currently.
“I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity to lead a company that has helped millions of people retire with ‘enough’ to live in dignity, and excited about the opportunity to help TIAA chart its next 100 years,” said Duckett when the news was announced.

When Baylor released the report and recommendations of the Committee on Historic Campus Representations last month, most attention was (rightly) placed on the committee’s historical study of Baylor’s connections to slavery and the Confederacy and their recommendations for what changes could/should be made to better tell the full story of our university’s history. The university is now working to evaluate those recommendations and decide next steps toward accomplishing that goal.
One first step, however, was announced that same day the creation of on-campus statues honoring Baylor’s first Black graduates, Rev. Robert Gilbert (BA ’67) and Barbara Walker (BA ’67). The statues are to be placed in front of Tidwell Bible Building, where both students took classes (and along the same street where the Judge Baylor statue still sits). The stories of “boom to bust” for college and pro athletes after their playing careers end are legion.
Vinnie Johnson, Baylor Class of 1980, is not one of those.
Johnson a two-time all-American at Baylor, one of the greatest sixth men in NBA history, and our pick as the greatest Baylor alum in NBA history has found even more success in the business world after his retirement from professional basketball.
The Brooklyn native first came to Waco to play for nearby McLennan Community College in 1975, transferring to Baylor two years later and posting two of the all-time great scoring efforts in Baylor men’s basketball history. Johnson left Baylor as both the single-season (25.2) and career (24.1) record-holder for points-per-game both records that stand to this day.
