Donna Lane, Columnist
On Dec. 10, the International Union for Conservation of Nature updated its Red List, an inventory of threatened species maintained by the organization and a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity.
In this Red List update, 31 species were declared extinct. And, of the now 128,918 species listed, more than 35,700 species are currently threatened with extinction. That’s almost 30% of all plant and animal species evaluated by the group. The species listed include all of the world’s fresh water dolphins, 40% of all amphibians, and almost one-third of all oak trees.

Sudan was the last of the male northern white rhinoceros species, previously native to the East and Central Africa area, just south of the Sahara desert.
He was captured as a two-year-old in Shambe, Sudan by animal trappers for Chipperfield s Circus in February 1975.

The International for Conservation of Nature updated its red list this week and includes 31 newly extinct species. There was some good news in the released report as well, however. The European Bison is showing signs of recovering and is no longer listed as “Vulnerable.”
The report highlights the success that conservation efforts have had on European bison populations. In 2003, the population was down to 1800 but has since grown to 6200. They have been upgraded from “Vulnerable” to “Near Threatened” on the red list. The species was reintroduced into the wild during the 1950s.
