Grandpa and Director André Marques The Drunk, André Marques’ debut feature film, is now in post-production. Over the years, Marques has directed more than a dozen short films, and for the director, this format is a “complete art form in its own right; it has its own identity. Cinema is cinema. But, for me, that was always a way to get to feature films. I never hid that.” Marques started working on The Drunk in 2011, and the project was developed with the support of the Venice Film Festival’s Biennale College Cinema programme in 2014 and the Plot Script Lab in 2015. Marques states, “Over these past ten years, I’ve worked on so many different things. This project grew, and so did I, as a director. With that diverse set of projects and experiences, I tried to figure out what kind of director I can (and want to) be. We talked to João Paulo Abreu, managing director of Films4You, about the special features of the Portuguese market and the current tendencies in the field of independent distribution. In the midst of a second pandemic wave, cinemas all over the country had to reduce their operations, while distributors decided to pull out most of their releases before Christmas, struggling to keep afloat with their already diminished resources. Cineuropa: How would you describe the editorial policy of your company and your set-up? João Paulo Abreu: Films4You focuses on the distribution of European films, from French comedies to German and Italian productions, including animated features.
