Celebrating its 20th „birthday”, the Charter of Fundamental Rights is an important and groundbreaking document. The participants of the webinar „Reinforcing the EU Charter: Rights of people in the EU in the next decade” organised by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the European Commission under the media patronage of EURACTIV and EURACTIV Poland, had no doubts about it. But they also pointed out that the Charter’s provisions still need to be better implemented at the national level
to protect citizens in their daily lives.
It has been 20 years since the proclamation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, a core document ensuring the rights and freedoms of the EU citizens. It is also a document with the same force as the Treaties. Its provisions became binding in the EU 11 years ago, when it entered into force together with the Lisbon Treaty.
