According to officials with Portsmouth Fire Rescue, the call came in at 6:16 p.m. for a fire at 37 Merrimac Drive. When crews arrived, they found light smoke coming from a second-story window. The fire was marked under control at 6:32 p.m. No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. The Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority is arranging housing for the displaced residents. The fire is currently under investigation by the Portsmouth Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters rescued a dog during their response to a house fire in Portsmouth Thursday afternoon. Dispatchers got a call about the fire around 1 p.m. and heard that someone may have been inside when it started. Fire units arrived at a two-story home in the Prentis Park section of the city to find smoke coming from the front door. The person inside the home was able to evacuate on her own.

Crews respond to fire at 8-story apartment building in Portsmouth

Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services By: Web Staff and last updated 2021-02-03 20:06:32-05 PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Firefighters with Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services responded to an apartment fire in the 300 block of Green Street Wednesday afternoon. Dispatchers received a call about an apartment on fire just after 3 p.m. Crews arrived on scene to find a smoke coming from the seventh floor of an eight-story multi-family apartment building. All residents were safely outside the apartment when firefighters got there. Crews made an aggressive interior tack using the building s standpipe system in the stairwells and quickly put out the fire in the apartment in question.
