Jason Murphy and his parents, Robert and Patricia, bought Portside Tavern in Hyannis in 2015 and moved to the Cape to run it.
Rockland native Murphy (his parents are South Shore transplants also) brought with him 75 of the half-century-old pizza pans they used at the Braintree pizzeria they owned from 2011 until they sold it to buy Portside Tavern.
They should have brought more.
“On a busy night (at the tavern), we could use twice that many pans. We have to wash and dry the ones we have and we couldn’t get more like this,” Murphy says of the antiques.
Always popular, Portside’s bar pizza business has increased since 23,000 people last year “liked” a Facebook page, the South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club, devoted to supporting South Shore bar pizza when the bars themselves were closed by COVID-19 restrictions. The effort helped keep businesses afloat with people buying gift certificates or ordering pizzas from bars still making them for takeout.
